Onboarding

Athlete enters the date of their upcoming game or tournament. This helps personalize the experience around a real moment they’re preparing for, instead of feeling like a generic wellness app.

From there, the user lands on the home screen, which works like a pre-game dashboard. It shows how many days are left until competition and gives them quick access to the tools they need most.

Visualization training

One of the main features is visualization training. Here, the athlete is guided to describe the moment they want to mentally rehearse, like walking onto the court or making a strong first serve.

The app then turns that into a personalized video prompt so the athlete can imagine success in a way that feels specific and realistic.

Breathing reset

Quick guided breathing to calm nerves and regain focus.

GAME DAY

The athlete starts with a quick check-in by choosing how they’re feeling. Based on that, the app recommends the most useful next step. The athlete can then choose what they need, complete a body scan, and identify where stress is showing up physically, like in the chest or hands.

LockIn then explains what those symptoms may mean and guides them through a short support routine, like a muscle release exercise. The goal is to help them feel grounded, focused, and ready right before the game starts.

Process

Survey

We surveyed 15 student-athlete peers coming from different sports teams (sailing, badminton, track, soccer and tennis) at Tufts to better understand how they experience pre-game stress and what support they currently lack.

Survey Results

The survey reveals that pre-game anxiety is a common and significant challenge for athletes.

64%

Reported physical symptoms such as tight chest, sweating, or shakiness

71%

Said the waiting period before competition feels more mentally difficult than the competition itself

69%

Said current wellness tools feel too general and not designed for athletes

83%

Said they would be interested in using a short pre-game app for focus and mental readiness

Project Goal

The app creates a structured path from waiting to performance, helping athletes feel more steady, prepared, and ready to compete.

Tailored routines help athletes regulate energy and lock in before competition

Personalized onboarding sets the game date and context

Body and emotion check-ins identify stress and tension

Visualization + voice prompts support mental preparation

Reflection

LockIn taught me how powerful it is to design for a very specific moment, not the entire experience, but the few minutes right before performance when emotions peak. Instead of overloading users with features, we focused on what athletes actually need in that moment: something quick, grounding, and personal. Through user feedback, I realized that simplicity and clarity matter more than complexity, especially under pressure. This pushed me to prioritize intuitive flows, immediate access to key features like breathing reset, and emotionally supportive elements like the archive.

I also learned how important it is to translate abstract feelings like anxiety into tangible design decisions. Designing LockIn challenged me to think beyond functionality and consider emotional impact, which ultimately made the experience feel more meaningful and human-centered.
